Christian Tschida Wine

Christian Tschida is a cult natural wine producer from Burgenland, in Austria.

Known to be a perfectionist and somewhat reclusive in his privacy, Christian Tschida prefers to let the wines speak for themselves and has earnt a loyal following across the world for his wines. He has most recently been seen showcasing with them with popular rapper Action Bronson.

Farming on mainly limestone, slate and gravel soils in both his hometown of Illmitz as well as the legendary Leithaberg region west of the lake Neusiedel, popular Tschida bottles include his Himmel auf Erden range, Non-Tradition Weiss, Kapital | and of course, his impressive Tschida Brutal Wine which is made from Pinot Noir, and in our opinion, has a similar foresty feel to that of a Burgundy red.

The iconic wines of Christian Tschida

Whilst his father promoted chemical-free viticulture through the organisation he founded, Christian Tschida began to make his own wines, in his own style with the least intervention possible in the cellar. One of his techniques includes keeping many of his wines in contact with oxygen whilst in the barrel (some for up to 5 years) and he is also known for using a special vertical press that he lightly squeezes the grapes to extract what Christian Tschida says is only the best juice… and he then returns the remaining juice and grape must back into the vines to promote the health of the vineyard.

Christian mainly farms on two different regions in Burgenland. Firstly, there are his plots around his hometown of Illmitz, which feature sandy gravel soils and limestone.

He also has excellent plots in the famed Leithaberg region, on the opposite side of the lake and closer to Rust. Here, limestone and slate provide excellent touches of minerality to wines and is one of the oldest known winegrowing sites in the world, actually, with some evidence pointing to vines being grown here from the 8th century BC!

Best wines from Christian Tschida

Farming a variety of grapes including Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir and Muskateller alongside much more common Burgenland varietals, there is a lot to discover with Christian Tschida.

Try his entry level wines ‘Himmel Auf Erden’ to get a sense of what Christian Tschida is about in regards to freshness and complexity, or if your budget allows, opt for a ‘Non-Tradition’ wine to taste his more serious wines, which from its name, taste and artwork is a snub at the conformist, regimented culture of Austrian winemaking - showing that wines should not have to adhere to a regional style to be considered a good Austrian wine. Hence.. his Non-tradition wines are very much made in a NON-traditional winemaking style.

The Tschida Brutal is of equal interest, which offers a vibrant bouquet of forest floor touches and earthy scrub, similar to a premium Burgundy and as such, is one of his most sought after wines.

You may notice with Christian Tschida wine labels that he is a lover of art, and you can see this instantly if visiting the winery... in fact Christian trained as a graphic designer before committing to making natural wine.
